![]() You may find, as many do, that the benefits of the grandeur outweighs the inconveniences.Įither way, it’s a place that every painter should experience at least once. And if you aren’t sure if you are one of those people, this is a wonderful place to test yourself. For those with a tolerance for roughing it, this remote wonderland is more than worth it. With the exception of breakfast and snacks at the B&B, you are on your own for food and anything else you might need (in other words, make sure it all fits into that backpack). But if you are planning a longer trip, be advised that there are no groceries or supplies on the island. Most visitors are lucky enough to get a cottage for only a night or two, although you can bring your sleeping bag and camp anywhere you please, for as long as you please (for free of course). The cliffs on the far side where the wild donkeys hang out among towering, abstract rock formations? The white sandy beach so loved by the seals, with the bright sail of a passing boat now and again? One of the pretty little footpaths that wind over hills and through fields of wildflowers, flanked by low stone walls and ending as they always do at yet another stunning view of the sea? ![]() The haunting, abandoned cottages perched along the cliffs? Once home to fisherman and farmers, all that remains today are stacks of drystone rubble…a bit of a roof here, a doorway there… The light is nothing short of magic at the moment, peeking through dramatic, low slung clouds that float across the landscape like ghostly apparitions. The smell of fresh scones from the B&B kitchen distracts you momentarily, but as there is painting to be done, you resist the urge. It’s just you and your easel, and a whole lot of eye candy that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.Īfter the ferry drops you at the port, you set off up the steep path through the village ruins and make your way toward a small cluster of cottages, one of which is yours for the night. You are one of only a handful of visitors that take advantage of this island and there is zero chance you’ll be interrupted whilst filling your canvas. And while sheep and wild donkeys are commonplace people are in short supply. Sea birds screech and soar, whales and dolphins frolic among the waves lazy seals sun themselves on a pristine beach. Picture yourself on a lush green island, surrounded by a thalo blue sea. MORE FREE PHOTOS OF GREAT BLASKET AVAILABLE HERE.
